Its National Apprenticeship Week 2022, so what better time to show off our amazing Apprentice!
So, meet Dom Hammond, our Degree Apprentice – Materials Scientist at DB Group.
Tell us about your role at DB Group
I’m the apprentice at DB Group, which means I get a range of different tasks to do. This can be in office or the labs, and in the future, out on-site as well. I am also studying Materials Science at Sheffield Hallam University for one week a month.
How long have you been at DB Group?
I have been here since June 2021 – so around 9 months.
What does a typical day look like for you?
A typical day mostly consists of lab-based testing. This can inlcude mixing concrete, testing samples and of course, lots of cleaning!
Alan also lets me build fences sometimes too….
What do you enjoy about working at DB Group? Or what do you enjoy about your role?
As an apprentice, learning is a huge part of my role. This is definitely my favourite part of the job, as I really enjoy building new skills and improving my knowledge within the industry.
How has DB Group supported you in your career?
By establishing my degree apprenticeship, DB Group have allowed me to study for a university degree whilst also gaining very valuable on-the-job training and experience.
What do you enjoy doing when you are not working?
Currently in my spare time, I am teaching myself how to play Piano. I used to be a Grade 3, but stopped playing due to more important things….like my PlayStation!
Tell us something that might surprise people about yourself (an achievement, something you do in your spare time)
For many years I was a swimmer, taking part in multiple competitions and events. But unfortunately, an injury left me out of action for over a year. So now I just paddle around instead.
